Video Slideshows…

For those of you who don’t know, I make these video slideshows. I take a bunch of photos, put them into slides, edit the photos, the way they transition and zoom and set them to music. I also design a label for the actual disc (using lightscribe of course) and a DVD cover to make it look a little more professional (which obviously I am not). I really enjoy doing them. Well, my mom recently told a friend who works at a company across the alley from us at the shop and he asked me to make one for him. No big deal, right? Well, he needed it in a week… Just a little time crunch… And to make it better, it was for his wife’s birthday, so it had to be perfect. I finished in time, don’t worry. So he has 3 kids, ages 4, 3, and 7 months. Well, the only one I have ever made where I seperate the kids is the one I made for my grandparents and that was only last Christmas, so I had a lot of photos from various ages to work with. What I found through making this… making a video of kids that are still so young is a lot harder! There is a lot less to work with, especially with the baby.

Anyway, he asked me to do some research and find out what this sort of think costs to know how much he should pay me. After doing the research, what did I find? The average cost of something like this is around $300-$400, with a max of about 175-200 photos, 1 copy of the video (labeled) and a DVD case with a pretty standard cover. I used about 225-250. This was the AVERAGE cost… The lowest I found, $140, with a max of 150 photos, 1 copy of the video in a normal cd case, with a standard label, and no copies of the editied photos. The highest I found, $1600 with a max of 200 photos, though this one included 2 copies of the video, a cd copy of the photos after the edits were complete, the disc was labeled and a cover for a DVD was designed. Oh, and just to stick it to the people who go through these companies, they get to choose the songs for your video with little to no input from you, and they charge an extra $0.50-$2.00 a photo that needs to be scaned in. Anyway, I didn’t charge him this much by any means. I’m sure these pros use a better program and I don’t want him to think I was overcharging him or anything.

So what did I learn through all this? These videos are expensive!! Maybe I should find a way to do this professionally, I’d probably make a lot of money! Anyway, I’ll try to post up the video I made my grandparents last Christmas if you are now wondering what I am talking about. I think I’ve made a total of about 6 videos, each is different… I love them!

Shinny things and the beach

Yes, it has finally happened! J and I are officially engaged as of yesterday night (7/19/08). The news has already started to spread like wildfire! We told 5 or so people at the church this morning, and I told another handfull of some close friends and within about 20 minutes it seemed like half the church knew. We don’t mind though. We kinda find it funny that people are reacting the way they are. We’ve gotten all kinds of responses. Some of my favs are, “I thought you two were already married,” “It’s about time,” and my personal favorite, “Finally! That’s a relief” said with both arms straight up in the air! People crack me up!

We’ve also been asked a bunch of questions already, the first of which and most popular is how did he ask. So here’s the story… We were at the Annual Beach trip yesterday and had been at the beach all day. Both of us got totally burned up, but that has nothing to do with the story, just thought I’d tell you. :-) Anyway, so when I got back from meeting a friends boss who lives down the street from where we were, J and I went for a walk and played with his camera a little. The sun had just dropped below the horizon so it was starting to get dark, but that didn’t matter. Just made the photo taking difficult.

Anyway, so we go to the pier and were checking out this photographer who was in the water shooting a surfer, why I don’t know because it was too dark to see at this point. J asked me to get him the short lens out of his back, which was odd because we had just been making fun of the guy shooting in the dark in the water, but whatever. So I go to get into his bag and there was a Build-a-Bear in there. Totally cute! He’s tan and fuzzy and has a voice box inside his hand. He told me to squeeze it, and I did, but I couldn’t hear what it was saying. We were afterall under the pier and the waves were crashing. So, since I couldn’t hear what it was saying he said it says “I love you. Will you marry me?” Of course I said yes!

When we go tback to the fire, he had told me that my sister and one or two other people knew he might do it last night, so we didn’t say anything. We waited to see how long it would take everyone to figure it out and to notice. I think it took my sister about 30 minutes to find it. Either way, everyone was so excited and freaking out. It was awesome and perfect and I loved it. :-)

Ok, so a few answers to a couple other questions. No we don’t have a date yet and we’re thinking a year to a year and a half, possibly 2 years max. It kind of depends on school and when we will have time to plan and stiff like that. Anway, that’s all for now I suppose. I’m sure I’ll have another post soon with some updated info as it comes. Until then, feel free to ask any questions you may have. I’ll post our web address soon. We gotta get it set up first. :-)

Back out in the desert…

Hello again! So, I came home from camp on Saturday, and less than a week later I left again. This time I’m doing research again. It is so hot an humid up here! Oh, and the best part, there is almost nothing going on at any of the territories that I’m watching. Blah… Oh well, it’s all data right? So we’ve been sitting at the territory, basically doing nothing for half an hour each. In the humid, sticky, gross sun. Oh well… It’s almost over now… One morning left. Then we go back home, and I get to stay there for about a month before leaving again…

Anyway, so if you don’t already know, I get to do research with the help of one of my best friends. Anyway, we came back into the common room of the center about 15 minutes ago after battling this huge ugly beetle. Oh, it was discusting and huge! So gross! He swept it off the pavement after fighting it for about 5 minutes trying to get it off the wall it had attached itself to. I was freaking out a little… It kept trying to run back at me! Actually, I think it was just headed for the wall, but still! If a giant beetle about 3 inches long with giant fang teeth thing coming out of its head, you’d be a little freaked too! Either way, it is gone now, but I still don’t want to walk around outside by myself now.

Ok, so side note. I’m so excited for a couple of things that are coming up! Here’s the breakdown…
J’s turning 23 on Wed (haha… you’re older than me old man!)
We have one of our prego friend’s baby shower on the Sunday after I get home! She’s due in Sept. Yeah!
Then the annual beach trip is on the 19th, which I’m so excited about because some of these people I only get to see once a year.
Last but most definately not least, one of my other best friends is pregnant and her due date is getting closer! I’m so excited! I’m going to be an auntie!!

Ok, I’m gonna go now. Until next time… Smile

Adventure Mountain

Hello again everyone. I’m back from yet another trip, this time to camp where I took some of my 6th grade girls from church for the week, and I’ve been taking them since they were in the 3rd grade. I look forward to this week every year! I love it up on the mountain! It is so much fun getting to spend time with the small group of girls that I take. I always seem to have the same girls, which is also awesome, because every year we get a little bit closer.

This year, I had 2 days to do laundry and completely pack for camp because we came home from Laughlin with 2 days until my sis and I left. Didn’t matter to me! I was happy to do the laundry and go, after all, this quite possibly could be my favorite week of the year for the past 4 years. The staff is amazing! I love them to death! Oh, and this year they had, well, mostly new staff, which was still awesome. They were a very young staff, but they totally rocked! Great job guys!

Anyway, while we are up on the mountain, Adventure Mountain this year… Side note… 3rd and 4th grade go to Indian Village, 5th and 6th grade go to Adventure Mountain and Junior High goes to Creekside, in case you were wondering. Anyway, back to the point… While we’re on the mountain we basically become the parent to these kids, but I refuse to play mommy to these girls when they have stupid little fights.  They had a few that some of the other councelors (not from our church) gave me dirty looks for making the girls work it out themselves. I think at age 12, you need to be able to handle a stupid little fight yourself without having someone else step in. They are amazing! they worked out all but 1 fight by themselves, and that one they couldn’t work out because it was between them and another girl from another tent who kind of has the attitude that she’s better than everyone else… We got it resolved though.

I also had the most amazing group of councelors there with me, both from my church and the one other that was added to my Nation. A nation is basically a group of 5 tents that hang out together all week for the activities. We had so much fun laughing and talking about things that we probably would never have discussed down the mountain. Anyway, gotta make sure they all know how much I love them!

We do all kinds of things with the kids. We go polar bearing, which is where the kids have to go underwater and hold their breath for at least 3 (I think) counts of a polar bear. Oh, by the way the water is about 46 degrees! No thank you! Haha… Also we go to the lake where they have the blob, they get to shoot bb guns and bows and arrows, climb the rock wall, and go to the skate park. There are a whole lot more, but those are all the ones off the top of my head…

My favorite part, believe it or not, is when we get the chance to do what they call deck connections. It is a point in time specifically set aside for each of the kids, girls in my case, to come out onto our tent deck and have a one on one chat with me about anything they wish to talk about. And when I say anything, I mean anything from their favorite food to their parents are getting divorced or something like that. I’ve known my girls long enough now that they all tell me the serious stuff in their lives, which I love that they trust me so much as to tell me things that they don’t even tell their best friends or their parents.  It is the coolest thing when a young woman confides her biggest secret in you and then openly talks about whatever it is, knowing that it will never leave me and her. I talk to most of these girls on at least a weekly basis, which allows me to connect even more and make sure they are staying on track if they have an area in their life which they are working to improve upon. A couple of them, I pretty much talk to daily as well. I love them to death!

Ok, so this post is getting kind of long, but there are just a couple of things I still need to say; things that I have to share because they are just awesome! Here’s the big one… On the second night of deck connections, the staff of the Mountain gave us the option to meet as a church instead of as individuals with our campers. After talking to the director of the children’s ministry of the church and getting together what we thought would be a 15 maybe 20 minute chat with our church kids, we decided to do it. We met as a church group instead of as individual tents.  This is about 50 kids… Anyway, we planned on reading two verses and asking questions to go with these verses, which we did and the kids had awesome answers! But on the second question, which was something about how we can be missionaries and worship God as kids when we come back down the mountain, one of the boys stands up and says in front of all of the kids that he has no friends at school, all the kids call him a loser and that his dad is dying of cancer. He said he wants to be the kid in the crowd who doesn’t treat people like that, he wants to help out the others who are in a similar situation to him.

That made most of the kids cry, and the leaders for that matter. What was so amazing about this night is the sense of the church family that I’m pretty sure most if not all of these kids got to feel and be a part of for the first time. After this young man stood up and shared, other kids started standing and sharing what they were going through. And let me tell you, some of these stories these kids have are those that are like a punch to the chest. I don’t know why or how these kids are dealing with some of the things going on in their lives. It just shows me how amazing they all are.

Oh, but it gets better. We asked one of the worship leaders of the camp to stick around and sing the Benediction for us when we finished, not knowing we were going to have cryfest… He shared a story about a teacher he had who’s wife got shot in the head and died on a Thursday I believe, and the teacher showed up on Monday. He told his students it’s what she would have wanted. This worship leader then decided to sing a song he had written for this teacher of his. It was amazing that he shared that with us, and let me tell you, if there was any kid who wasn’t crying yet, they all were when he was finished. And yes, even the boys were crying. They justified it by saying real men cry because one of our amazing councelors was crying. How awesome is that!

So we sang the Benediction in a big group hug. I can honestly say that I have NEVER seen God work in the lives of kids in a better way. The rest of the week they couldn’t be seperated, the guys, the girls, they all stuck together and backed each other up. And now that we’re home, I’ve already seen some of these campers, both boys and girls, hugging each other and asking if there is anything they need prayer for. I can’t believe how awesome that was. It leaves you with a feeling like no other. I can only describe the experience as a once in a lifetime, truely amazing experience.

Ok… so this is really long now, but I hope you all think it’s worth it to have read it. The funny part of the whole camp experience is how many of the councelors (again, not from our church, this is from what we have heard from other sources) come home and feel totally drained. Camp for me is exactly the opposite. It is what recharges me for the rest of the year. And when I start to feel drained again, I just call up some of my girls and have some fun. They recharge me. They teach me more than I teach them I think. I love them all.

Well, those are the ramblings for now. I hope I didn’t bore you… Until next time, don’t forget to smile at the little things :-)

A trip to Laughlin

Hello everyone. It’s been a while since I’ve written because I’ve hardly been home to write for about the past few weeks. Life is crazy! Anyway, we just got back from a trip to Laughlin for my sister’s birthday with my family. We also brought along J, by brother’s boyfriend and one of my sister’s best friends. We spent the first night in Laughlin at the Riverside. J and I spent the afternoon hanging out with my brother and his girlfriend since we’re not much for gambling. It was pretty cool, we had a lot of fun roaming between hotels and playing games.

Our fun changed later that night, however. My broher’s girlfriend up sick all night long. The next day we moved to Lake Mohave where she stayed in bed all day. My brother and J went out and had some fun exploring the lake on the sea does and came back already burned since it was about 115 out there. Anyway, so we spent the day, hanging out watching TV in the airconditioning.

The third and last day at the lake, we were all good. We went out on the boat and the sea does for most of the day. We found alittle adventure along the way. While we were playing along the lake, we saw an aweful lot of smoke coming from across the lake. We were worried that it was a boat that had caught on fire, so we headed over. What we found was a fire on the shore that some bonehead had started by lighting a BBQ and leaving it. There was still flames all over the place. It wasn’t huge, maybe a 40 foot square area, but my brother being the future fire fighter that he is, we all stopped and did our best to put the fire out. We weren’t too successful until another boat showed up with some 5 gallon buckets for us to use. The sad part is that we sent my sister and her best friend out to go to the dock to have them call the fire department. We stayed there for over 3 hours waiting in case the flames started back up, and no one showed. My sis and her friend were back within 20 minutes, but no fire department. They apparently didn’t believe us or they were just going to let the fire burn. Either way, we got the fire out, and it didn’t flare back up while we were there.

Anyway, all in all it was a fun trip. We got to battle a fire, hang out with the family and friends, and get a little sun burn. It was fun.

A long needed break, well, sort of…

Hello everyone! It’s been a while since I’ve written, and for those of you who chech this out on a normal basis… I’m sorry. A lot has happened lately, especially in the past two weeks.  A quick preview… graduation, parties, baptisms, finals and party planning…

Lets start with finals since they came first. I have never had finals that I was so worried about.  I wasn’t so worried because I didn’t really know the material, I was more worried because I knew it was the end, my final attempt before I graduate. I knew one final was going to be aweful, and it was, but all in all it didn’t turn out so bad…

Graduation! So I graduated officially on May 17th at 8 and 10. Yes, we had two different graduations. The first one was the school wide graduation, in the sun, for two hours… It was the long one that all the speakers were at and they seemed to go on forever. I hated being there when I was sitting in the sun, but looking back at it, I’m actually glad I went.  The second I have to say was a little bit worse, believe it or not. They had us in this tent type thing that held in the moisture and made it extremely humid… I could have delt with that, but then the smell of all the sweating people around us was aweful… Anyway, I’m glad I went, though I still don’t feel like I graduated because I am heading straight into the next program.

I had two “parties” in the past week… Ok, really just one… My grad party. The second was a gathering of some friends at D&B. Both were amazingly fun! I love hanging out with close friends in both types of situations, but I feel like I haven’t had mch time to see them with my busy schedule. I’m sorry guys, hopefully it will get better now! So, D&B… Awesome! Haven’t had a day out with my friends like that in over a year! I mean, we hang out when we have a chance, but usually we end up talking about school or something related to either school or work. As for the party, those of you who didn’t make it down, you missed a great time! I got to see a couple of friends that I haven’t seen in over six months. I can’t believe how much I missed them, and had no idea until I saw them… I love you guys!

Ok, so moving on… J and I shot a baptism Sunday the 18th. It was a lot of fun! The baptism was for triplets and for their older sister, who happens to be my brother’s girlfriend. I love her too! :-) They all were so awesome! Ari was beautiful in her white dress, and the babies were so cute in their little white outfits.  All in all, I would do it again in a heatbeat. Still working on the editing though… we took about 600 photos and I’m over half finished… I’m working through them.

I’m also house sitting for one of my advisors, with her three totally cute dogs. On Saturday night, J and I got to see friends who came down from Northern California. We love you guys! Then on Sunday I went to a BBQ with a few friends… Had an awesome time! yo yo yiggity yo girls! Crazy busy!

Finally, party planning. I was extremely lucky to have my graduation party with a close friend who ended up doing a lot of the party planning. Thanks so much Sarah! I love you girl! But now I am trying to help plan my brothers party. His is 5 hours long and in my backyard, which is still under construction. I have to make the playlist, which shouldn’t be too bad, right? Well, here’s the catch… There will be people here from ages 10-70… I have to make a playlist that will be long enough, include enough music that my brother likes, and somehow mix in music that will be apealing to my grandparents and the adults that will be there. Then, I have to make sure that the lyrics are appropriate and figure out the right order to make the songs transition right…. It will be some work… But I’m up for the challenge.

So… That is the combo of the last two weeks… Crazy busy, but totally worth the loss of sleep! Until next time… :-)

Weddings & sickness…

So far this year, well, in the past two months I’ve been to two weddings. I’ve had a great time, don’t get me wrong, but they get me thinking… Things I want, things I don’t want, that kind of stuff.  But this last one made me start wondering why everyone is getting married so quickly. I’ve been dating J for longer than most of the people I know who are married have even known their spouse. I’m not saying it’s a bad thing at all, just so we’re clear, it’s just strange for me to think about. Anyway, the wedding we went to last night was beautiful.  Unfortunately, both J and I had been awake for a very long time and went home early.  I woke up this morning feeling horrible… I have a major migrane, that weak feeling and my stomach is doing flips all over the place. It is not a good time to be getting sick either… four weeks of school left, a few presentations, a few exams, graduation and a few other things I have going on. This sucks… Hopefully its only a one day thing…

Being Spoiled and Doing Research…

So it’s been a little while since I’ve written, life is busy. I am currently out at Boyd Deep Canyon Research Center in Palm Desert hanging out with my hummers. For those of you that have been under a rock, I’m doing my Master’s in Environmental Studies (finally finished and submitted the application yesterday) and I am doing the project on Hummingbirds… Costa’s to be exact, hence the photo of the hummer… :-) Anyway, so my advisor and I haven’t exactly been on the same page over the last few days. We both had different interpretations of what I was doing for my control. So yesterday it all sorta hit the fan. Some of the girls (yes, as of now the lab is all girls, and yes we are spoiled…) needed to go home. We had some major misunderstandings with who was driving who when and basically in the last ten minutes before they needed to be on the road in time it was all figured out.

As for my part… I was thinking my control for my project needed to be two data collections one week apart, since I am collecting the data about every four weeks. That way I could show there would be no need for me to be out here every weekend collecting data. Well, she said that having two data collections in a couple days of each other is good enough to prove that, so I was a little confused, not by what she was saying but as to what her reasoning was. I’m still not quite getting it, I have two data collections twenty-four hours apart and I don’t see how that shows I don’t need to be here every weekend. Oh well, she’s the advisor and the one who knows what she’s talking about.

So back to the spoiled thing… There are currently seven of us, all girls and we are completely spoiled field researchers (and loving every minute of it). We stay in the Research center when we go out where we have dorm style rooms, a full kitchen, a living room type area, and two bathrooms with showers. To top things off, my advisor brings her hubby who does work out here too, and he cooked for us every night. We’re eating great home-made meals every night! It’s awesome! Oh, but wait… it gets better :-) On Monday night, my advisor made us all home-made margaritas… Yummy! This has got to be the best lab ever!

I have a little more news to share. So, if you’re reading this, I think I can make the assuption that you’ve read most of my posts before… Well, then you already know that one of my best friends is going to have a baby (so I’m gonna be an auntie!). Well she went in for her first appointment the other day where they showed her a picture of the little angel they are calling “rebel” for the time being. They got to see the heart beat which is awesome. Anyway, the point… she’s due on November 8th. :-) Anyway, just thought I’d share… I’m stalling so I don’t have to study, but I suppose I should get to it. :-(

Yeah God Moment!!!

I met with my advisor this morning to re-write a grant application in hopes of being awarded about $1000 to fund my research. Well, during this meeting I asked if it was really necessary for me to do a full two years of research before I finish my Masters. She told me that it wouldn’t be necessary and that a single year is plenty.  What does this mean for me? If I can get the instructors to allow me take a couple of classes as co-reqs then I might be able to finish it in a year and a half instead of two years!!! I’m excited to find out, but I’m not totally worried about doing the whole 2 years, it won’t kill me. Anyway, just thought I’d share =)
