Weddings & sickness…

So far this year, well, in the past two months I’ve been to two weddings. I’ve had a great time, don’t get me wrong, but they get me thinking… Things I want, things I don’t want, that kind of stuff.  But this last one made me start wondering why everyone is getting married so quickly. I’ve been dating J for longer than most of the people I know who are married have even known their spouse. I’m not saying it’s a bad thing at all, just so we’re clear, it’s just strange for me to think about. Anyway, the wedding we went to last night was beautiful.  Unfortunately, both J and I had been awake for a very long time and went home early.  I woke up this morning feeling horrible… I have a major migrane, that weak feeling and my stomach is doing flips all over the place. It is not a good time to be getting sick either… four weeks of school left, a few presentations, a few exams, graduation and a few other things I have going on. This sucks… Hopefully its only a one day thing…

Being Spoiled and Doing Research…

So it’s been a little while since I’ve written, life is busy. I am currently out at Boyd Deep Canyon Research Center in Palm Desert hanging out with my hummers. For those of you that have been under a rock, I’m doing my Master’s in Environmental Studies (finally finished and submitted the application yesterday) and I am doing the project on Hummingbirds… Costa’s to be exact, hence the photo of the hummer… :-) Anyway, so my advisor and I haven’t exactly been on the same page over the last few days. We both had different interpretations of what I was doing for my control. So yesterday it all sorta hit the fan. Some of the girls (yes, as of now the lab is all girls, and yes we are spoiled…) needed to go home. We had some major misunderstandings with who was driving who when and basically in the last ten minutes before they needed to be on the road in time it was all figured out.

As for my part… I was thinking my control for my project needed to be two data collections one week apart, since I am collecting the data about every four weeks. That way I could show there would be no need for me to be out here every weekend collecting data. Well, she said that having two data collections in a couple days of each other is good enough to prove that, so I was a little confused, not by what she was saying but as to what her reasoning was. I’m still not quite getting it, I have two data collections twenty-four hours apart and I don’t see how that shows I don’t need to be here every weekend. Oh well, she’s the advisor and the one who knows what she’s talking about.

So back to the spoiled thing… There are currently seven of us, all girls and we are completely spoiled field researchers (and loving every minute of it). We stay in the Research center when we go out where we have dorm style rooms, a full kitchen, a living room type area, and two bathrooms with showers. To top things off, my advisor brings her hubby who does work out here too, and he cooked for us every night. We’re eating great home-made meals every night! It’s awesome! Oh, but wait… it gets better :-) On Monday night, my advisor made us all home-made margaritas… Yummy! This has got to be the best lab ever!

I have a little more news to share. So, if you’re reading this, I think I can make the assuption that you’ve read most of my posts before… Well, then you already know that one of my best friends is going to have a baby (so I’m gonna be an auntie!). Well she went in for her first appointment the other day where they showed her a picture of the little angel they are calling “rebel” for the time being. They got to see the heart beat which is awesome. Anyway, the point… she’s due on November 8th. :-) Anyway, just thought I’d share… I’m stalling so I don’t have to study, but I suppose I should get to it. :-(
